Between 3, y ago and 2, y ago, regional pollen sequences indicate a replacement of mature rainforests by a forest—savannah mosaic including pioneer trees. A rigorous test of this hypothesis, however, requires climate proxies independent of vegetation changes. Here we resolve this controversy through a continuous 10, y record of both vegetation and hydrological changes from Lake Barombi in Southwest Cameroon based on changes in carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of plant waxes. Based on the combination of these data with a comprehensive regional archaeological database we provide evidence that humans triggered the rainforest fragmentation 2, y ago. Our findings suggest that technological developments, including agricultural practices and iron metallurgy, possibly related to the large-scale Bantu expansion, significantly impacted the ecosystems before the Common Era. Social interactions, cognitive correlations and polarization” Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, In this paper, we address the question of the conditions for persistence of technological boundar We use field studies to test the predictions generated by a theoretical model in analytical sociology and examine the micro- processes at stake in the non-diffusion of techniques: The ultimate goal is to provide archaeologists with an empirically tested model to explain spatial distribution of technological clusters and maintenance of technolo- gical boundaries. Field studies examine ethnographic situations in four countries where social groups using different ceramic techniques for making utilitarian vessels live in close geographical proximity.

Application Suitable for samples up to about Ka containing quartz. The quartz can be very fine grained c. Ideal for young sediments with no biogenic material present or where the age of the sediments exceeds the range of 14C dating c. Requires precise measurement of sample water content and salinity.

The report will contain OSL results calibrated for sample water content and salinity. Turnaround time is several weeks to several months and very dependent on the time taken to prepare the samples, with organic rich samples taking the longest. Please contact us for more information. Technical Information Method All sediments contain trace minerals including uranium, thorium and potassium.

These slowly decay over time and the ionising radiation they produce is absorbed by other constituents of the sediments such as quartz and feldspar.

How did Libby test his method and find out if it worked correctly? Libby tested the new radiocarbon method on carbon samples from prehistoric Egypt whose age was known. A sample of acacia wood from the tomb of the pharoah Zoser was dated for example. Zoser lived during the 3rd Dynasty in Egypt BC. The results they obtained indicated this was the case.

Many other radiocarbon dates were conducted on samples of wood of known age.

The small-signal speed of sound in humid air is calculated from a model which includes the real-gas effects from the equation of state for humid air and the vibrational dispersion due to N2, O2, and CO2 relaxation. Other atmospheric effects such as dispersion due to viscothermal and rotational relaxation, heat radiation, propagation along the air-ground boundary, the density gradient, turbulance, aerosols and fogs are considered and found to be unimportant for frequencies between 1Hz and 5 HHz at one atmosphere.

The uncertainty in predicting the sound speed varies between 0. Experimental results in humid air at 20C and 30C are in excellent agreement with the model. For the propagation frequency of 20 Hz, it is found that the presently used sound-ranging formula, c – A correction to the “sonic” temperature determination is suggested with results in deviations of less than 0.

Optical dating of 15 sediment samples using the OSL signal of quartz and TL determinations on five burnt flint artifacts gave a series of internally consistent dates that provided age estimates for, and bracketing, the bead-bearing deposits.

Roman mortar on display at Chetham’s School of Music. The first mortars were made of mud and clay. Because of a lack of stone and an abundance of clay, Babylonian constructions were of baked brick, using lime or pitch for mortar. According to Roman Ghirshman , the first evidence of humans using a form of mortar was at the Mehrgarh of Baluchistan in Pakistan, built of sun-dried bricks in BCE. Gypsum mortar, also called plaster of Paris, was used in the construction of the Egyptian pyramids and many other ancient structures.

It is made from gypsum, which requires a lower firing temperature. It is therefore easier to make than lime mortar and sets up much faster which may be a reason it was used as the typical mortar in ancient, brick arch and vault construction. Gypsum mortar is not as durable as other mortars in damp conditions. In the Indian subcontinent , multiple cement types have been observed in the sites of the Indus Valley Civilization , such as the Mohenjo-daro city-settlement that dates to earlier than BCE.

Gypsum cement that was “light grey and contained sand, clay, traces of calcium carbonate, and a high percentage of lime” was used in the construction of wells, drains and on the exteriors of “important looking buildings. This aqueduct dates back to c. The Romans later improved the use and methods of making what became known as pozzolanic mortar and cement.

It includes techniques such as optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL), and thermoluminescence dating (TL). “Optical dating” typically refers to .

These slowly decay over time and the ionizing radiation they produce is absorbed by mineral grains in the sediments such as quartz and potassium feldspar. The radiation causes charge to remain within the grains in structurally unstable “electron traps”. The trapped charge accumulates over time at a rate determined by the amount of background radiation at the location where the sample was buried.

Stimulating these mineral grains using either light blue or green for OSL; infrared for IRSL or heat for TL causes a luminescence signal to be emitted as the stored unstable electron energy is released, the intensity of which varies depending on the amount of radiation absorbed during burial and specific properties of the mineral. Most luminescence dating methods rely on the assumption that the mineral grains were sufficiently “bleached” at the time of the event being dated.

Quartz OSL ages can be determined typically from to , years BP, and can be reliable when suitable methods are used and proper checks are done. Boyd, and Donald F. Saunders, who thought the thermoluminescence response of pottery shards could date the last incidence of heating. Ioannis Liritzis , the initiator of ancient buildings luminescence dating, has shown this in several cases of various monuments.

Perforation types Upper recorded on the dorsal and the ventral sides of N. Possible evidence for the stringing of the perforated shells as beads comes from the identification on ten specimens of a wear pattern different from that observed on both the modern reference collection and unperforated specimens from Taforalt. The wear in the latter case homogeneously affects the whole surface of the shells and consists of a microscopic dull smoothing associated with micropits and rare short, randomly oriented striations.

Terraces are the most prominent feature of the agricultural sphere in the hilly landscape. Using terrace walls for the artificial creation of arable plots of land was a major technological innovation that has completely altered the natural terrain. It dramatically increased the carrying capacity of the land by transforming previously inhospitable regions into cultivated land plots and resulted in a major shift in human sustainability strategies. The exact dating of these seemingly simple stone constructions carries with it many implications for our understanding of major settlement and demographic shifts through time.

Studying the natural setting is crucial for our perception of human choices and abilities and for reconstructing how human action has altered the natural landscape. The dating of terraces by conventional archaeological tools proved to be unreliable for a number of reasons. The present study offers a new interdisciplinary approach, combining geological, geomorphological and archaeological studies with direct dating of terrace sediment-fill using the OSL method.

In two preliminary and published researches conducted at the site of Ramat Rahel, near Jerusalem Davidovich et al. The proposed research intends to survey, excavate and date terraced farming systems in six selected agricultural sites in this region, in order to reach a well based spatial and quantitative sample of c. The results will enable for the first time a comprehensive reconstruction of the changing landscape through time, an accurate reconstruction of human existence strategies and a better understanding of historical demographic cycles in the Judean hills The Project is carried out in cooperation with:
